Our Story
In December 2025, a neighborhood vandal cut and destroyed my Christmas light display. With my holiday spirit undeterred, I strung up new lights in addition to a high end, hardwired surveillance system to keep watch – only to discover this supposedly state-of-the-art system was lacking in capability despite the high cost. So, I tested every self hosted VMS available, looking for better options. They all fell into the same traps: dated legacy software, flimsy open source FFmpeg wrappers, or gatekept enterprise software requiring a sales call just to get a quote. With all these surveillance shortcomings, I found my opening to build Oculent VMS as the perfect solution.
Responsible AI Use
Our company policy strictly prohibits AI generated code. While generative AI has accelerated software prototyping, relying on it in critical software like our video management system is irresponsible. Many of our deployments operate in air gapped, offline environments where updates are infrequent and require on-site service. For us, building uncompromised trust far outweighs the trend of adopting generative AI just to keep up.
